USB has it’s issues at times. It’s probably not your software but you should update if you haven’t in a while. More likely is the USB bus is getting glitched. There might be an indication of that in dmesg (type dmseg as the Linux prompt).
One thing that has worked for some is to wrap 4 or 6 turns of the USB cable around a ferrite core. Also use as short of a USB cable as possible and insure good grounding.
